Sara Durning

STUDIO #16D

Artist Statement

Sara is a New Zealand-born, Canada-based artist whose acrylic paintings explore memory, movement, and the emotional resonance of landscape. Her ongoing View From a Car Window series captures fleeting impressions of place—moments glimpsed in transit, shaped by lived experience and remembered landscapes, including quiet echoes of home. More recent works, including Between States, extend this exploration through atmospheric paintings that hold tension between clarity and uncertainty, reflecting landscape as both physical and emotional space.

Working between observation and abstraction, her paintings invite viewers to connect through atmosphere rather than exact location, leaving room for personal reflection and interpretation. Alongside her landscapes, Sara also paints native birds and flora, continuing her interest in memory, belonging, and the natural world.

With a background in digital design and a Master’s in Inclusive Design from OCAD University, she balances structured creativity with expressive painting. Since 2019, she has steadily developed her visual art practice, with each body of work deepening her exploration of what lingers—between places, between moments, and between memory and form.
